Briefly Noted

On the first Sunday of the month,
we present a few photos taken around Waikiki,
with just a brief comment.

Well, it must be safe, or they wouldn't let them do it ... er ... right?

A dramatic Lion Dance at the International Market
celebrated the Chinese New Year

A Waikiki block party marked the return of the Pro Bowl to Hawai`i;
there was the usual giant traffic jam

TheBus did a great job ferrying fans from Waikiki to the Pro Bowl game
with a large number of special buses

And finally, our mystery photo for the month:
can you guess where the photo above was taken?

Last month's mystery photo was taken in the alley that runs between Kuhio and Kalakaua on the Diamond Head side of the International Market.
Rather a strange place for part of a Banyan tree,
which can be seen on the `Ewa side of the alley.

I enjoyed your blog.

David and I have never attended a Sunset at the Beach, because of the paucity of parking.

However, we dined once at the Cheesecake Factory several years ago (blogged about it, too). We were seated after a FIVE MINUTE wait, believe it or not. We were there at 11:30 am so maybe that's the secret. Go early.

Oddly, when we drove through Waikiki in December, I saw no vacant or boarded up stores. I must be blind!

Gigi: thanks for your comments. Parking in Waikiki, for whatever the event, is an issue that we hear a lot about. It is a perennial problem. We often recommend TheBus if you're not planning to stay late into the night.

You definitely had good luck with five-minute seating at Cheesecake Factory. We've had instant seating at off-hours once in a while, but if you go at seven PM, you will have quite a wait, even with the restaurant's large seating capacity.

Driving through Waikiki you may not notice empty storefronts or buildings quite so readily as you would when walking, which is of course what most tourists do. Fortunately there aren't a lot of boarded-up properties, but a few of them have been there for a very long time. Our point was that our tourists, who go to a lot of trouble and expense to come here, deserve the best we can give them.
